The Association of Courcelles de France

The Association of Courcelles de France includes towns and villages whose name « Courcelles » is included in the name of the Commune. It was created in 1999. According to Article 2 of its statutes, the aim of the Association of Courcelles de France, whose headquarters are located at the Courcelles de Touraine Town Hall, 2 rue Michel Pétrieux – 37330, is to create a network of sports and cultural exchanges between the municipalities named Courcelles. It is therefore a space of solidarity, sharing and exchange.

The origin of the name

The name « Courcelles » has its origin in the language of oïl which was spoken in northern France from the middle of the 1st millennium. This may explain why the French municipalities that bear this name are with one exception near the north of the Loire, and generally in the north and northeast of the country. Courcelles comes from Corcellae, itself from the diminutive Latin Corticella of Cortem, which means small courtyard, farmhouse enclosure. One might think that this is why all these municipalities have relatively few inhabitants. The most populous in France has a legal population of 6,652 inhabitants (Courcelles lès Lens in the Pas-de-Calais), and the smallest of 24 inhabitants (Courcelles sur Voire in the Aube).

In France, the following 39 municipalities, three of which have merged with other municipalities, meet the above-defined criterion. This is not to mention the dozen or so villages called Corcelle or Corcelles.
A Belgian town of about 30,500 people, located near Charleroi, is also called Courcelles, as well as a village of just over 1,000 inhabitants in Quebec, near Lake Saint-François.
